Effects of Polygonum Cuspidatum Containing Resveratrol on Inflammation in Male Professional Basketball Players

چکیده
BACKGROUND Exercise can lead to acute oxidative stress, which can result in oxidative damage and induce inflammation. Resveratrol may reduce the levels of inflammatory cytokines. Thus, we investigated the effects of this compound on the plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in male professional basketball players. METHODS Twenty healthy male professional basketball players were randomized into two groups (10 each). For 6 weeks, they received daily either 200 mg of polygonum cuspidatum extract (PCE) standardized to contain 20% trans-resveratrol equivalent to 40 mg trans-resveratrol or placebo. Indices of inflammation were measured before and after 6 weeks of supplementation. RESULTS There was a significant reduction in plasma levels of TNF-a and IL-6 after 6 weeks of supplementation; while no change was observed in these markers in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Present study shows that 6 weeks of PCE containing resveratrol supplementation reduces the inflammation in male professional basketball players.

Resveratrol, trans-3, 5, 4’-trihydroxy stilbene is a naturally occurring phytoalexin present in many different types of nutrients which we consume on daily basis. Resveratrol was first isolated from dried roots of Polygonum cuspidatum, as the principal active ingredient. Polygonum cuspidatum and its extract have been used in Japanese and Chinese traditional medicine for treatment of various ski...

to extract active components from the traditional Chinese medicine Polygonum cuspidatum using a trans-resveratrol imprinted polymer. Good separation and purification of trans-resveratrol and emodin from the Polygonum cuspidatum extract are achieved after condition optimization. The extraction recoveries are 83% and 99% for trans-resveratol and emodin, respectively. The results show that the mol...

Resveratrol (3, 5, 4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a phytoalexin contained in a variety of plants, such as grapes, berries and especially in the dried roots of Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc. It has been shown to exhibit anti-oxidative and anti-inflammation activity, and to reverse the effects of aging. Its ability to suppress cell proliferation, induce apoptosis and suppress the metastasis and i...

متن کاملResveratrol attenuates hypoxia-induced neurotoxicity through inhibiting microglial activation.
Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol enriched in Polygonum cuspidatum and has been found to afford neuroprotective effects against neuroinflammation in the brain. Activated microglia can secrete various pro-inflammatory cytokines and neurotoxic mediators, which may contribute to hypoxic brain injuries. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential role of resveratrol in attenuating hypox...
